CBS aired Maude, an American sitcom, from September 12, 1972 through April 22, 1978, when it was first telecast. Actress Bea Arthur portrays middle-aged, politically liberal Maude Findlay in the HBO series Maude, which is set in suburban Tuckahoe in Westchester County in New York. Maude was a staunch supporter of women's rights, a consistent Democratic Party voter, and an outspoken proponent of a variety of progressive causes, including the right to an abortion and racial and gender equality. As a result of this, she frequently found herself in hot water for speaking out on these problems. Norman Lear produced All in the Family and Maude; Beatrice Arthur originally played Edith Bunker's cousin Maude on Maude; the show was a sitcom with topical plots and was a spin-off of that show. Maude and Walter were the only characters featured in several half-hour "two-hander" teleplays that were unusual for a US sitcom. In "The Analyst" from Season 4, Bea Arthur presented a whole episode-long monologue to an invisible psychotherapist, revealing her innermost thoughts and feelings about her own life.
