Jack Roosevelt Robinson rose from humble beginnings to cross the color barrier in baseball and become one of America's most revered individuals. A staunch integrationist, Robinson utilized his enormous celebrity to speak out against the bigotry he witnessed on and off the field, infuriating fans, the press, and even teammates who had formerly praised him for "turning the other cheek." After baseball, he became a highly read newspaper columnist, contentious political activist, and persistent supporter for civil rights, but he battled to stay relevant as diabetes damaged his body and a new generation of leaders charted a more aggressive course for the civil rights movement.
