House of the Dragon

In the prequel series, the Targaryen dynasty is at its greatest pinnacle of power, with more than fifteen dragons under its control. Real and imaginary civilizations typically fall from such heights. In the case of the Targaryens, their steady decline begins about 193 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, when King Viserys Targaryen breaks a century's worth of tradition by designating his daughter Rhaenyra successor to the Iron Throne. When Viserys eventually fathers a son, however, the court is startled when Rhaenyra retains her position as his heir, sowing discord throughout the realm.
