The Silence Before Bach
This new movie from the strange and experimental Catalan director Portabella is a beautiful, sometimes slightly crazy celebration of Bach's music and a look at how it fits into the world today. The film is a playful, painterly series of variations on the idea that Johann Sebastian's extraordinary ear for harmony changed the way people hear all over the world. It does this by mixing historical reconstruction with "dramatic" scenes and documentary sequences that are only loosely connected to each other.
