The Heartbreak Kid
Christina (Claudia Karvan) is a school teacher who comes from an affluent Greek-Australian family. She is engaged to a lawyer and is satisfied with the traditional direction that her life has taken. She begins teaching at a working-class elementary school in the inner city, where she finds that her ideals are being challenged by the pupils and teachers there. When Christina becomes involved in a campaign to organize an all-girl soccer club at a school where the racist PE teacher only supports Australian Rules Football, she begins to fall in love with Nick, a 17-year-old soccer player who is also a member of the campaign's organizing committee (Alex Dimitriades). Christina is forced to confront herself, her family, and the culture in which she lives as a result of the subsequent affair. Successfully combining comedic elements with a thought-provoking exploration of contemporary ethnic relationships in Australia, this film is brilliantly performed by a youthful ensemble and insightfully scripted, and it is a must-see.
