The Cigarette
LA CIGARETTE, Dulac's first surviving title, is about a liberated young lady and her older husband, who suspects she is having an affair—alluding to a true postwar crisis of manhood in France. Dulac's subdued acting and location shooting combine realism and impressionism, creating tension between modernity and antiquity, life and death, and masculinity and femininity through cinematic-specific techniques, editing, and more.
