The Birth of a Nation

The two families, abolitionist Northerners that the Stonemans and also Southern landowners that the Camerons, intertwine in director D.W. Griffith's contentious Civil War epic. When colonel Ben Cameron is recorded in conflict, nurse Elsie Stoneman petitions because of his pardon. In Reconstruction-era South Carolina, Cameron founds the Ku Klux Klan, combating Elsie's congressman father and his African-American protégé, Silas Lynch.
