Safety to Nome
A group of athletes is sent to Alaska every February to take on a journey that will test their bodies and minds, their wills to succeed, and their wills to live. An ultra marathon called the Iditarod Trail Invitational is the world's longest, toughest, and most remote one. Competitors have to go 1000 miles across the Alaskan tundra on a bike, on foot, or on skis. Many more people have climbed Everest in an afternoon than have cycled from Anchorage to Nome in the same amount of time. However, this year, 26 people will try to run the full 1000 miles of the Iditarod Trail. There is a record for the fastest time. It is 12 days. Most of the time, it goes on for more than 30. Elite athletes come to this race every year in search of purpose and excitement because they don't know what's going to happen. But the same unknowns make this race one of the most dangerous on Earth. How willing are you to lose your toes, your hands, or a person you care about? That's what happens if you aren't ready for the Iditarod Trail when you go.
