Perfumed Nightmare

Tahimik explains the rhythms of daily life in the community through voiceover narration. He is fascinated by Voice of America broadcasts, particularly those about the space program. He aspires to be a member of the developed world and establishes the Werner von Braun fan club. When an American arrives for an ill-fated international meeting, he is given his opportunity. The American invites him to Paris to operate his gumball vending machine concession on the streets. He meets acquaintances in Paris and on a trip to Germany, where he realizes that progress in the developed world comes at the expense of fundamental principles. With footage of a summit meeting in Paris as a backdrop, and unable to return to an idealized image of his past, he stubbornly refuses to capitulate to the terms of progress, resigning as head of the Werner von Braun fan club and vowing to find his own way.
