Mr. Jones
Gareth Jones, a Welsh journalist, travels by train from Moscow to Kharkov, Ukraine, in March 1933. He disembarks at a small station and embarks on foot on a journey through the country, witnessing firsthand the horrors of famine. Everywhere he goes, there are dead people, and he meets henchmen of the Soviet secret service who are determined to keep news of the disaster from reaching the general public. Stalin's forced collectivisation of agriculture resulted in misery and ruin; the policy amounted to mass murder. Jones, with the help of New York Times reporter Ada Brooks, succeeds in spreading the shocking news throughout the West, effectively putting his powerful rival, Pulitzer Prize-winning, pro-Stalin journalist Walter Duranty, in his place.
