Solange is depressed: she has ceased grinning, she eats little, she says . She has fainting fits. Her husband Raoul seeks to save her by minding a stranger, Stephane, to be her fan. Even though he moans to Mozart and it has every bank account arranged in alphabetical order, Stephane neglects to cheer Solange. She knits. She's housework. Everyone, including their neighbor a vegetable vendor, agrees she needs a child, yet she fails to have a baby by lover. The three require a job managing a children's summer camp where they meet with Christian, the precocious 13-year-old son of their factory manager. It is Christian who devotes Solange to laughter
