Toshir Mifune stars as a young, idealistic physician who helps run his father's (Takashi Shimura) clinic in a rundown neighborhood. When he cuts himself while operating on a wounded soldier, he acquires syphilis from the patient's blood. He dismisses his distraught fiancée without giving her a reason, and then secretly seeks treatment while being tortured by his guilt.
