The Orphanage
A historical drama featuring Bollywood musical moments. Early 1990s in Kabul. The country is ruled by Soviet ideals. Women can wear miniskirts to school, children can attend school, and people can attend movies, concerts, and universities. In Afghanistan, living is very similar to life in the West. Qodrat, 14 years old, sells movie tickets on the illegal market in Kabul's streets. He ends himself at the Soviet orphanage after accidentally selling a ticket to a secret police official, where he fakes his name at registration in the hopes of gaining greater power. Friendships, falling in love, doing wicked things, and embarking on adventures are all part of Qodrat's daily life, just as they are for children all around the world. However, when the Mujahideens begin the civil war, the world they once knew is rapidly changing behind the secure walls of the orphanage.
