Deacons for Defense
This drama is based on a true tale and is set in 1965, shortly after the Civil Rights Act was signed into law. Despite the Act, African-American inhabitants in Bogalusa continue to be considered as second-class citizens, with their fundamental human rights routinely violated by the white supremacist system in general and the local KKK branch. The plot recounts the establishment of a group of local black males, notably ex-war veterans, who assemble "Deacons for defense," an all-black defense force dedicated to patrolling the town's black section and safeguarding its citizens from the more violent parts of "white backlash."
